Chapter 141: Everything the Fire Left
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. She had never seen a spell apologise before. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
“Everything the Fire Left”
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
