Chapter 143: No Crown Without Blood
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
“No Crown Without Blood”
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
