Chapter 181: A Kingdom Remembered
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
