Chapter 185: Below the Seventh Gate
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

“Below the Seventh Gate”
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
