Chapter 245: Below the Seventh Gate
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
“Below the Seventh Gate”
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She had never seen a spell apologise before. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
