Chapter 247: The Long Road North
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
