It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

“Everything the Fire Left”

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
