It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

“Where the Old Ones Sleep”

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
