They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

“Everything the Fire Left”

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Quiet Storm10 months ago

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
