The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

“The Long Road North”

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
