Chapter 58: The Second Awakening
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She had never seen a spell apologise before. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
