Chapter 66: A Debt Paid in Silence
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
“A Debt Paid in Silence”
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
