By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

“No Crown Without Blood”

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
