Chapter 78: A Debt Paid in Silence
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
“A Debt Paid in Silence”
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
