Chapter 83: No Crown Without Blood
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She had never seen a spell apologise before. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
