Chapter 86: The Weight of a Name
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
