Chapter 91: The Long Road North
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

“The Long Road North”
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
