He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
