The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

“The Second Awakening”

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
