Chapter 106: The Second Awakening
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. She had never seen a spell apologise before. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

“The Second Awakening”
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
