Chapter 108: Where the Old Ones Sleep
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
