The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
