Chapter 149: Below the Seventh Gate
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
“Below the Seventh Gate”

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
