Chapter 152: Wolves at the Threshold
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
