Chapter 161: Below the Seventh Gate
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
“Below the Seventh Gate”
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
