Chapter 173: Below the Seventh Gate
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. “Below the Seventh Gate”
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
