By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

“Where the Old Ones Sleep”

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
