The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Quiet Storm3 years ago

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
