Chapter 209: Below the Seventh Gate
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

“Below the Seventh Gate”
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
