They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
