Chapter 277: A Kingdom Remembered
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
Comments5
Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
