By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

“Everything the Fire Left”

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
