They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
