They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
