Chapter 634: The Second Awakening
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
