Chapter 644: Wolves at the Threshold
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
“Wolves at the Threshold”
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
