They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

“A Debt Paid in Silence”

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. She had never seen a spell apologise before. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
