Chapter 760: What the River Kept
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
“What the River Kept”
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
