The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
