By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

“The Second Awakening”

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
