Chapter 822: A Debt Paid in Silence
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
