Chapter 855: Ashes on the Wind

By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

“Ashes on the Wind”

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
