Chapter 321: Everything the Fire Left
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
