Chapter 2: The Weight of a Name
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

“The Weight of a Name”
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
