Chapter 276: Where the Old Ones Sleep
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
“Where the Old Ones Sleep”
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
