The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

“Wolves at the Threshold”

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
