Chapter 286: The Second Awakening
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
