They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

“The Long Road North”

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
