It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. “Everything the Fire Left”

She had never seen a spell apologise before. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
