It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

“The Second Awakening”

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
